When I first heard of this concept, I was quite sure I wasn't going to like it. Most of us, when thirsty, crave a cool glass of ice water so the thought of a steaming glass of hot water seems just wrong. But to be honest, it's not bad at all. I have been experimenting with ginger and lemon infusions but just plain is okay too.
So why hot water? Drinking hot water has its origins in Ayurveda practices. The thought is that boiling water enriches it with energy helping flush out toxins and purifies the body, and science even backs it up!
Hot Water Can Improve Digestion
Hot water helps break down food and reduces the risk of constipation. It is believed to stoke the fire of our digestion.
Improves Circulation
Hot water can expand the blood vessels in turn improving circulation. Improved circulation supports better blood flow to muscles and organs and can help muscles relax, reducing pain.
Helps with Weight Loss
Drinking more water helps you feel full, decreasing your hunger, but switching to hot water also helps boost your metabolism which in turn helps you lose more weight.
Reduces Stress
Drinking hot liquids has been found to lower stress and reduce feelings of anxiety.
The best way to make sure you drink enough hot water throughout the day is to boil a pot in the morning and then fill a thermos to take with you. I was gifted a great little thermos which doubles as a tea infuser. You can fill the basket with tea, or in this case ginger slices, and pour the hot water over the top. I love the simple design but best of all it keeps liquids hot for hours. Sometimes even too hot so make sure to be careful as to not burn yourself!
